Discovering Alessandra Scandella

inter scandella

In her travels Alessandra Scandella always carries with her a small set of watercolours, brushes and inks to fix on her moleskine images and situations she encounters, people who attract her, maybe sitting in a café in Marrakech. Alessandra uses watercolours as her camera.

I chose to begin the article with this romantic image that the artist gave us because I believe that these few lines can better describe the artist Alessandra Scandella.

Alessandra welcomes us in her apartment in Milan, where she lives with her family and Churchill, her dog. After offering us a cup of coffee, rigorously prepared with mocha, we begin our conversation in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The artist has already collaborated with WallPepper, signing some of the subjects, so we know each other well.

Alessandra Scandella is an artist who makes her talent a full time job, she loves the watercolours and inks and uses her passion to create artworks for publishing, fashion and interior design. Remembering her artistic journey, she explains that her subjects have changed over the years, keep on evolving as the way she sees things evolves, from more academic and descriptive works Alessandra is transforming the way of expressing herself.

Her watercolours are becoming more lighter leaving more space to the observer and giving him the keys to enter in her works. “Slowly I'm becoming more minimalist!”.

Alessandra gives importance to the simplicity of her watercolours, to their brightness, stains and transparency: "I prefer to make dozens of draft in order to choose the most essential. Working too much with the watercolours means ruin it."

While she is speaking she shows us her sensitivity and the desire to get excited about the experiences and the things that surround her. Alessandra has a calm and positive way to describe her emotions, she captures and bring us inside her world. Her personal perception of the reality that surround us, is showed in the lines of her subjects: a world made of warm colours and undefined lines, a world where you can let go and travel with the imagination.

When we talk about her collaboration with WallPepper, Alessandra confesses us that she has been very involved in the project because it was an idea that she would realize by herself time ago. The opportunity to create a "watercolour in large scale" was greeted with enthusiasm, and the result is really fascinating. The subjects that the artist created and chosen for the WallPepper collections are characterized by a light watercolor backgrounds and ink sketches, more or less detailed, that represent ample spaces and female figures. The idea is to allow people who come into a room decorated with wallpaper by WallPepper to be able to enter in a another space beyond the real one.

You get a chance to get into an imaginary space and be able to experience the atmosphere that the watercolour suggests.

The project is based on an excellent quality of wallpaper so the passage through a digital phase - that processes the images and prepare them for printing - is inevitable. Alessandra proved to be an ideal partner for this too: her work lead her to meet the digital interface daily, so she can takes the best of the opportunities that these new techniques offer. "My work involves a first step, the construction of the artwork: the preparation of backgrounds with watercolours, ink sketches and drawings, then everything is scanned at high resolution and highest quality in order to pass to digital, assemble levels, make changes, and prepare files for printing. "

Decorate a room or a space with a wallpaper by Alessandra Scandella means travel with imagination, be carried away by the emotions and the light and contaminated atmospheres that the “traveller artist" brings with her works.
